The 18th Century Counterpoint and Fugue

18th-century counterpoint and fugal music, epitomized by J.S. Bach, focused on weaving multiple independent melodic lines into a harmonically coherent texture, balancing strict linear independence with functional harmony. This style used complex techniques like imitation, inversion, and sequence within a major/minor framework to create unified, structured pieces often defined by a “subject” or theme

Composer Johann Sepastian Bach
was the cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig for 27 years.

Photos by Don Robertson (2007)

During my research trip to Europe in 2007, I visited the beautiful city of Leipzig, Germany. My first stop in the city was the Thomaskirche, the church where Bach taught and compose music and directed the choir. There was a concert that night, and this was my view from the loft where I was seated.

The story of my going there

These are photos that I took of the exterior and the interior of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany
